Speed Racer

Wow.

A few nights ago we caught Speed Racer at the dollar show.

Call us crazy, but we actually liked it!

I had heard that the reviews were terrible, so I went in to it not expecting it to be double-billed with The Shawshank Redemption, so perhaps our sights were lower than the average critic.

Psychedelic-trippy-more-than-exist colors? Totally. Sometimes there was just so much going on in the scene that I had no idea what was what, who was winning or if we had just gone plaid.

The acting was okay for this type of movie, and I actually laughed out loud a few times, which surprised me. Our kids definitely enjoyed the racing scenes and crazy stunts and tracks, but they got a little restless in the extended dialog scenes.

What's funny is I went through the whole thing thinking Val Kilmer played Rex Racer, but apparently it's this dude! Some people on the forums apparently also think that he looks like Val Kilmer, so I guess I'm not the only one.

I really like the car designs too.

I went in with *low* expectations to a free screening (we did a few shots with the semi at night with the large moon) and came out *bored*. Forgettable.

...although there is no denying that monkeys is funny.

It's definitely not on my list of favorites, but I admire them for doing something that far out there.

Would I buy the DVD? Not for $20, but I wouldn't mind having it just to show someone how crazy and ridiculous it is. I think it is so over the top that I like it.

And I dig ANY monkey that throws feces!

Just image the speed racer car... in approximately 1/48 scale... with the barrel of a vulcan machine gun sticking out of the hood....

1/48 scale Car Wars anyone?

That's good to hear... I remember the cartoon as a kid... my all-time favorite... and was disappointed that so many had panned it.

Don't know if i'll rent it or dl it... but I'm still not a fan of dragging a family of 6 out to movies that end up costing me 10+ per head to get in... just to find out the movie wasn't worth renting.

In my youth, my friends and I would take those little wedge-shaped erasers and draw on them, with intentions of making racar cars... lot's of fun.

@Shawn,

We saw it at the dollar show, so even if it was going to be awful, it was only going to be $4 worth of awful!
